Discover ACT

ACT (Australian Capital Territory), is categorised as a Territory within the state of New South Wales, southeast of Australia. Canberra is by far the most populated city and also the capital of Australia.

The ACT is bordered by the Molonglo River in the northeast, the Goulburn-Cooma railway line to the east, the drainage divide of Cotter River to the west, and Naas Creek to the south. There is also a small strip of terrain around the southern end of the Beecroft Peninsula, which is at the northern promontory of Jervis Bay.

Distinct from other self-governing Australian territories (the Northern Territory), the ACT does not have an Administrator. The Governor-General is the representative of the Crown in the ACT’s government. Actually, the conclusions of the assembly could have been overruled by the Governor-General up and until December 2011, however, this ruling was under section 35 of the Australian Capital Territory Act of 1988 until the federal parliament voted to abolish this veto power in 2011.

Many of the roles that a state governor normally performs are conducted by the Chief Minister in the context of a state; although, the laws and summoning of meetings of the Assembly is gazetted by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.
